Reading and baking (green bread and pizza)

Since we've been home a lot, like everyone else, we've been getting a lot of reading, baking (and eating) done. And one thing that's always bothered me is the that I've never been able to find a recipe book aimed at encouraging reading. .. Bear with me.. See, sometimes you, and your kid get fed up of reading about Biff and Chip and how Dad fell in the water (Oh no!) and want to do something else. So you encourage your kid to read the recipe book instead, but then the recipe book has so many words, and so many pictures.. that your eyes cross and .. if you're like me, you find yourself picking out the five most important ingredients and mixing them up. And you know what? Often it comes out pretty darn good anyway. So then I got to wondering, what if I could create a recipe book designed to be read by a child practicing reading. The baking is the byproduct and the resultant baked goods is the reward to encourage the reading.

I've started, and I'm going to start publishing the recipes here. if anyone's child is at about this level of reading and is willing to try it on them I would be overjoyed to hear some feedback..

The text has been purposely written and designed to ease the reading of those more challenged readers - those with dyslexia. I've used a clear font, avoided green and red text and trickier words have been substituted where possible.

Measurements, food types and instructions have been colour coded to ease the child's comprehension of the recipes.

The recipes have been simplified as far as possible. They should be followed together with an adult who understands basic recipes and can adjust where necessary.

Green bread!

Wash your hands.

Blend to a pulp 170 grams fresh spinach and one cup of milk.

Add these two things and mix:

One teaspoon salt

One egg

Put these things in another bowl and mix:

Four and a half cups of bread flour

Two teaspoons of dried yeast

Two tablespoons sugar

Four tablespoons of butter

Mix it all together and knead it a little.

Cover with a damp and clean cloth.

Leave to rise for one hour.

Preheat oven to Gasmark 4.

Bake for 30 minutes.

(P.S. when it come out the oven, schmear a spoonful of butter over to glaze it.)

I'd really appreciate feedback if anyone tries this out with their kids.

PPS. Anyone here know the book Mrs Wobble the Waitress? The top image of Batya making biscuits while wearing roller skates was inspired by repeated readings of that book.
